G7 leaders photo doctored to insert image of South Korean president

The manipulated image, depicting Yoon alongside G7 leaders at Hiroshima’s Itsukushima Shrine, was posted onFacebook on June 15, 2023.

The Korean text beneath the picture translates to: “Revived sense of national pride. Yoon Suk Yeol stands prominently within the G8 as a confident president.”

The G7, composed of leading economic powers including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan, used to be referred to as the G8.

Russia became a member in 1997 but was indefinitely suspended in March 2014 due to its annexation of Crimea.

Although South Korea isn’t an official G7 member, Yoon participated in the Hiroshima summit as one of eight guest nations (archived link).

Official photos released by the Japanese Foreign Ministry and its corresponding press release clearly indicate Yoon’s absence during the G7 leaders’ visit to the Itsukushima Shrine (archived link).

The manipulated image was shared on Facebook through these links: here and here, and also on Naver Band, a South Korean forum.

Hiroshima summit

Using a Google reverse image search, a matching photograph was discovered on the Council of the European Union’s website (archived link).

The accompanying caption reads: “G7 summit, Hiroshima, Japan, 19-21 May 2023.”

In the authentic image, Kishida, the host of the summit, is positioned in the center, flanked by French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Joe Biden, in contrast to Yoon’s presence in the manipulated version.

Displayed below is a side-by-side comparison of the altered photograph (on the left) and the unaltered image published by the EU Council (on the right):
